SIGMA IOTA IOTA CHAPTER HISTORY

HISTORY

In 1990 on the military base of Fort Irwin a small group of men set out to create Sigma Iota Iota chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. The vision was to provide a vehicle for men of standing and like attainments to come together to commit itself to the cardinal principals of Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift . The Sigma Iota Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. was chartered on August, 7, 1992 in Barstow, California. Sigma Iota Iota's founding was the brilliance of five great men. Those great men were Randy Charleston, Larry Day, Shannon Jones, Major Leroy, and Stuart Young.

Randy Charleston was the leading figure in the discussions about organizing a group of men that will serve the High Desert Community. After relocating from Dallas, Texas in 1990 Randy Charleston searched for a chapter to become affiliated with but soon realized that the nearest chapter was nearly 100 miles away. He also noticed that there were many brothers of Omega Psi Phi in the area that were inactive due to Fort Irwin's geographical location. In the Fort Irwin community there was also a very large African American population in the area but weren't any charaitable organizations servicing the area. After gathering this information Mr. Charleston set out to create a chapter with the purpose and aim for establishing a chapter in the High Desert mirrored those aims and purposes of the Founders of our fraternity. There were several goals that were identified.

1) Establishing a chapter that would be closer to home for the members that were traveling to Fort Irwin from Victorville, Apple Valley, and Hesperia to maintain their active membership in the fraternity.

2) Creating a chapter that would be small enough to maintain a close bond among the brotherhood in order to carry out the mandates of the fraternity.
